Our Wine Experiences

Our wine experiences take place in the Underground Wine Experience, an underground space designed to reveal Pico’s soul. Along the path, visitors cross a museum gallery with period photographs, traditional tools and objects related to the vineyard and basalt work — a silent testimony to the resilience and ingenuity of those who make wine in one of Europe’s most extreme territories.

Wine Experience – 2351 meters

Vertical tasting of the Cancela do Porco label, a family project that honors Pico’s identity. Through three distinct vintages, this tasting takes us on a journey through time and wine, symbolically adding up 2351 meters of accumulated altitude — a tribute to Portugal’s highest point and the verticality of the experience.

Wine Experience – Basalto

Tasting of 3 white wines from local producers, made from Pico’s three traditional white grape varieties: Arinto dos Açores, Verdelho and Terrantez do Pico. A sensory journey revealing Atlantic purity, basalt minerality and the authenticity of a territory where every wine tells a story of resilience and identity.

Wine Experience – Dragoeiro

To the three white wines of Pico’s traditional varieties, we add a rare 10-year-old fortified wine from the island, produced without added brandy — an ancestral and natural method possible only under Pico’s unique conditions. A tasting of depth and elegance, where time, terroir and tradition express themselves in every drop, with a long and unforgettable finish.

Wine Experience – Basalto & Criptomeria

Three white wines from Pico’s traditional varieties, carefully paired with Azorean delicacies, in a sensory experience crossing the character of volcanic vineyards, the freshness of the sea and the deep aromas of the cryptomeria forest. A tribute to the diversity and authenticity of the island’s flavors.

Wine Experience – Estromboliana

A complete tasting of four Pico wines — three whites and a rare fortified — each paired with an exclusive delicacy. A sophisticated celebration of Atlantic terroir, where wine and gastronomy dialogue with the island’s deep identity, balancing salt, basalt and memory.

Wine Experience – Soul of the Cave

€120 per person · 4 fortified wines + pairing · 90 min · Exclusively held in the Soul of the Cave room

 

In this unique and intimate tasting, served in the hotel’s most secluded space, we explore three fortified wines from Pico — a rare and deeply identity-rich style, produced without added brandy, in a natural process allowed only by this volcanic island. The experience is guided by one of our wine tourism specialists and each wine is carefully paired with an Azorean delicacy, creating a dialogue between sweet and salty, intensity and subtlety, land and sea.

All Wine Experiences are led by members of our Wine Tourism team, specially trained to provide a rich, informed and personalized experience.

Tastings take place in the Pico Vineyard Hotel’s tasting room, a space carefully prepared for moments of discovery, comfort and authenticity.

Experiences are subject to prior reservation and confirmation by the hotel, to ensure availability and the best possible preparation.

Tastings can be conducted in Portuguese and English, upon request and depending on team availability.

When applicable, gastronomic pairings are made with local products, respecting seasonality and the identity of Azorean flavors. It is important to specify dietary restrictions and allergens when booking.

The average duration of tastings ranges from 45 to 75 minutes, depending on the selected experience.
